Expectations for Participants

  • Commitment: Engage regularly and consistently throughout the program.

  • Confidentiality: Maintain a safe space for honest conversations.

  • Respect: Value each other's time, boundaries, and perspectives.

  • Growth Mindset: Embrace learning opportunities for both parties.

Mentees' Responsibilities

Mentees are expected to take ownership of their development journey. This includes initiating meeting scheduling, defining clear professional development goals, coming to meetings prepared, and being open to feedback. Mentees should seek specific advice on challenges and follow through on insights and commitments.

Mentors' Responsibilities

Mentors should guide by using active listening and thoughtful questioning. Key responsibilities include providing honest, constructive feedback, sharing relevant experiences and industry insights, connecting mentees to contacts and resources, and helping mentees understand organizational dynamics, industry nuances, and potential career paths.

Tips for an Effective Mentorship Relationship

  1. Build Trust Early: Share backgrounds and interests, set mutual expectations, and create a confidential space.

  2. Establish Clear Goals: Mentees should identify 1–3 professional development goals, and mentors can help align these goals with industry expectations.

  3. Communicate Regularly: Schedule meetings in advance, use shared documents to track actions, and communicate early if rescheduling is necessary.

  4. Practice Active Listening: Mentors should ask open-ended questions and guide reflection, while mentees should be honest about challenges and receptive to feedback.

  5. Be Open and Curious: Embrace different perspectives and learning styles, and remember to celebrate progress, not just outcomes.

Glossary terms or definitions

Mentorship: A relationship focused on long-term growth and guidance, holistic professional growth, knowledge and wisdom sharing, and relationship-based career development. Mentoring provides guidance, perspective, and ongoing support to help individuals navigate career transitions and challenges. Its core purpose is to inspire individuals to achieve their goals and lead better lives, often through creative inspiration and fostering new perspectives.

Mentoring vs. Coaching: Mentoring is distinct from coaching. Coaching is typically short-term, skill-specific, goal-oriented, and task-focused, centered on feedback and behavior change.

Performance Management: This differs from mentoring, as performance management involves a formal evaluation process, goal-setting tied to objectives, and alignment with organizational goals.

Tacit Knowledge: This is the unwritten, intuitive understanding a mentor possesses, gained through experience, regarding complex workplace dynamics, reading organizational culture, or approaching thorny problems. The transfer of tacit knowledge is highly valuable in mentorship.

Program Phases: The program is structured into distinct phases, which typically include a Kickoff (virtual welcome), Monthly Check-in (e.g., email from committee members), Mid-Program Meetings (separate virtual meetings for mentors and mentees to assess progress), and a Closeout (a virtual thank you event).
