The SPA Lifetime Achievement Award honors sustained contributions that have advanced the research, practice, and understanding of people analytics. Its first presentation recognizes Dr. Fitz-enz’s decades of leadership in human capital measurement and the influence of his work on generations of practitioners, researchers, and organizational leaders.
As noted in SPA’s official recognition letter, his contributions did more than introduce new measures: they helped make space for an entire profession to develop. The approaches used across the people analytics community today build on the foundation he helped establish.
A pioneer in human capital analytics
Widely regarded as a founding figure in human capital measurement, Dr. Jac Fitz-enz helped establish the analytical foundations of modern people analytics. After holding senior human resources positions in major organizations, he founded the Saratoga Institute, where he developed systematic approaches to evaluating workforce costs, effectiveness, and organizational performance.
In 1978, he published pioneering human resources metrics, followed by international HR benchmarks in 1985. His work challenged the prevailing view that human resources could not be evaluated through rigorous business measures and helped organizations understand the relationship between workforce decisions and financial outcomes.
Over more than four decades in HR analytics, Dr. Fitz-enz authored 12 nonfiction books and approximately 400 articles. His influential works include The ROI of Human Capital, The New HR Analytics, and Human Capital Analytics. His writing and research helped advance the profession from descriptive measurement and benchmarking toward strategic and predictive analysis.
His contributions have earned recognition across the profession. The Society for Human Resource Management identified him among the individuals who significantly changed the practice of human resources, and the International Association for Human Resource Information Management honored him with its Chairman’s Award for innovation. His work has also reached an international audience through the education and training of managers in dozens of countries.
Following his retirement from HR analytics, Dr. Fitz-enz turned to fiction, writing Undaunted Lovers and Spies with Benefits, and completing The Shanahans trilogy. His continuing literary work reflects a lifelong commitment to inquiry, ideas, and storytelling.
